Every year, during the months of May and June, each Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. , the beach of Nazaré revives the traditional fishing art – the art “xávega”. Fishermen, women traditionally dressed, and everyone wanting to help, pull in the fishing nets to the shore, in a choreography of strength and colour. Once the nets are opened, with the fish still alive and jumping, begins the historic reproduction of the Fish Auction, like it used to be in the 1930s to the 1950s, right there on the beach. Anyone can buy the fresh fish directly there, just by saying the correct buying order “chui”.
